Brand new cardio equipment room!

Brand new cardio equipment room!

The Spears YMCA of Greensboro has grown! Our new $2 million dollar expansion and renovation provides new spaces for our teen and senior members. Child care areas have been updated (and moved), and we have more open space in our most popular areas such as cardio and fitness classrooms. In addition, a brand new entrance has been created. Please come visit our new facility for a tour!

As good as the Spears Y was, I can’t believe it’s going to get even better. Kudos on keeping pace with what the members want.

Hi – will you be adding a track? Indoor or outdoor will be fine.

    thanks
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

Unfortunately, we won’t be adding a track. The retro-fit costs for an indoor track were simply too much. There is an outdoor cross-county trail behind Spears that’s a little less than a mile – I’m sure the front desk could help with directions (it’s around our back fields.)

    Thanks for your question!

Please, please tell me that there will be a sauna. A Y without a sauna is like a multi-vitamin without Vitamin C.

    Hi Rob,

Unfortunately, there will not be a sauna. Yes, saunas can be the “vitamin c” of many Ys. Our Bryan, Reidsville, and Hayes-Taylor Ys all have sauna in their locker facility. However, the retro-fit costs to Spears simply stretched our budget too much for this amenity. We even researched adding them as stand-alone units to the pool deck, but it just wouldn’t provide our members with enough space.

Thanks for your comment, though. We appreciate the thoughts.

Does Spears plan to ever add an outdoor pool?

    • 7 YMCA of Greensboro January 9, 2009 at 10:11 am

      Hi Kim,

As of right now, no. There have been studies done by the Spears Y board about this, and the costs involved in maintaining a outdoor pool year-round can be enormous. There’s also a question of space. The Raleigh Y has experience with this, and while it’s a popular addition at one of their branches, it can be a bear to keep up. However, there’s always hope for additional expansion. And, if plans continue for an additional Y branch to replace our Hayes-Taylor facility, this would certainly be a point.

      Thanks for your comment!

I would like for any of the Greensboro Y’s to add a raquetball court. Every Y I have ever been a part of has had raquetball courts except for Greensboro.

    • 9 YMCA of Greensboro January 21, 2009 at 11:57 am

      Hi Kate,

It’s a very popular request – we are asked this question a LOT. Originally, our central Y and the Guilford College Y had racquetball courts. However, when the new facilities were built (Bryan and Spears), the demand for the courts was outweighed by higher demand for more cardio and classroom space. We did consider this in the revision plans for Spears, but once again the need for more classroom space and a larger teen area simply outweighed the room for racquetball. Thanks for your comment and question, though.

Will the Spears YMCA be adding new fitness equipment?

Spears is great! Aesthetically, will the bricks from the expansion match the old bricks, from the outside they do not seem to play well together.

      Hi Lanny,

They are supposed to be as close as we can get, according to our architect and builder. I also think they have some clean up to do as a final touch, and that might help some. Thanks for the question!
